Frequently Asked Questions
I’m new to weight training. Is this suitable for me?
Absolutely. In fact, you’re exactly who these classes are for and complete beginners are welcomed. You need to start somewhere, and the pace and exercises are easy to follow. We recommend you start with light weights and take it easy on your first few sessions while you familiarise yourself to your class.
Can I try a trial class before I commit?
Yes – we offer a FREE trial class so you can join us, meet the group and see if you enjoy it with no pressure. Once you’ve had your trial session you can buy a block of 5 or 10 Class Passes which last 3 months. Class Passes make it simple to book and give you flexibility.
What happens in a Women’s Strength class?
Our classes use kettlebells, resistance bands and bodyweight movements – they’re fun and you can adapt them to your level. You’ll do a few exercises on the floor, but you’ll only need to get down and up once. Classes are designed to build real, functional strength: the kind that makes you feel capable and confident in your body. Every class is led by a qualified instructor who understands women’s strength training for all ages. We usually go for coffee afterwards where you can get to know your fellow class mates better.
How big are the classes?
Class size varies but kept to a maximum of 20 women – a large enough group to be fun, but small enough that we can check you’re doing the correct technique. You’ll always get guidance on the moves.
What is the cancellation policy?
We ask for a minimum of 24 hours’ notice if you want your Class Pass credited back to your Women’s Strength account. Even if you are within the 24 hours cutoff we’d appreciate it if you could cancel, as although we’ll be unable to refund you, your spot can be offered to someone else.
Where are classes held?
Classes take place in large halls – accessible, spacious and away from an intimidating gym environment. Free parking and loos are available and the venues are easy to get to. See our location page.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear anything you feel comfortable moving in. The only thing you need to bring is a yoga mat and water. Supportive trainers are a good idea and layers are worth wearing if it’s cold. Some people like to bring a small cushion for their head for the floor moves.
I have a health condition. Can I still take part?
Conditions like osteoporosis, arthritis, a joint replacement or a heart condition don’t automatically rule you out, we just need a conversation first. We assess every situation individually so contact us before you come and we can have an informal chat.
I’m worried about keeping up or doing something wrong. What if I struggle?
Every exercise can be modified if you’re struggling, and your instructor will show you how to adjust any exercise so it works for your body. You can take as many breaks and do as many reps of each exercise as you want. And if you struggle at first don’t worry – it isn’t failure, it’s where progress starts!
Is strength training actually safe for women my age?
Not only is it safe, it’s one of the most important things women can do. Strength training helps maintain bone density, protect joints, improve balance and preserve muscle mass – all of which naturally decline with menopause and age if we don’t actively work against it. Done well and with proper coaching, strength training is transformative. Just talk to our community!
What results can I realistically expect?
Women in our classes consistently tell us they feel stronger, more energetic, and more at home in their bodies. Physically, you can expect improved strength, better posture, greater stability and increased stamina. But the thing most women don’t expect is how it changes the way they feel about themselves – more confident and empowered.
Will I bulk up?
No. This is one of the most persistent myths in women’s fitness, and it’s simply not how female physiology works – particularly post-menopause. What strength training does is build lean, functional muscle that makes you look move better, live your life with more energy and feel more capable and confident.
How soon will I start to notice a difference?
Many women notice a difference in how they feel within the first two to three weeks – more energy, better sleep, a sense of doing something that matters. Visible physical changes typically follow over six to eight weeks of consistent attendance. The most important thing is showing up.
I’m worried about coming on my own!
The women who come to Women’s Strength are warm, welcoming and genuinely good company. They’re active, sociable women who take their health seriously without taking themselves too seriously. Many arrive alone, and leave with people they genuinely call friends. Join us for coffee afterwards to get to know your group better.
Is this just for a certain type of woman?
No – the only thing our women have in common is that they know their strength matters – and they’ve decided to do something about it. They come from all backgrounds, all fitness levels and all starting points. Some have never exercised before. Some are returning after years away. Some are already active and want something more purposeful. All of you belong here.
